Straight Lines for JEE Maths
Straight Lines is the foundation of Coordinate Geometry in JEE. While the individual concepts are simple, JEE problems combine multiple ideas — angles, distances, families of lines, and loci — into challenging multi-step problems. A strong grip here makes Conics and 3D Geometry much easier.
Prerequisites: Class 10 Coordinate Geometry basics
What JEE Tests
Key areas:
- Equations of lines in all forms (slope-intercept, point-slope, two-point, intercept, normal)
- Angle between two lines, parallel and perpendicular conditions
- Distance from a point to a line, distance between parallel lines
- Concurrency of three lines
- Family of lines passing through intersection of two lines
- Angle bisectors of two lines
- Locus problems resulting in straight lines
- Area of triangle formed by lines with coordinate axes
Essential Concepts
General form: ax + by + c = 0. Slope = -a/b. Distance from point (x₁,y₁) to this line = |ax₁ + by₁ + c| / √(a²+b²).
Angle between lines with slopes m₁ and m₂: tanθ = |m₁ - m₂| / |1 + m₁m₂|. Parallel: m₁ = m₂. Perpendicular: m₁m₂ = -1.
Family of lines: Any line through the intersection of L₁ = 0 and L₂ = 0 can be written as L₁ + λL₂ = 0. This is extremely powerful for JEE — find λ using an additional condition.
JEE Problem-Solving Tips
For problems involving the area of a triangle with vertices, use the determinant formula: Area = ½|x₁(y₂-y₃) + x₂(y₃-y₁) + x₃(y₁-y₂)|.
For angle bisector problems, remember there are always two bisectors (acute and obtuse). The bisector containing the origin can be identified by sign analysis.
When three lines are concurrent, the determinant of their coefficients = 0. This is faster than solving two pairs and checking.
Key Formulas
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Mistake: Using slope formula when the line is vertical (undefined slope)
- Mistake: Forgetting absolute value in distance formula
- Mistake: Sign errors in family of lines parameter λ
- Mistake: Not considering both angle bisectors
How to Practice This Topic
Start with basic equation forms (10 problems), then distance and angle problems (10), then family of lines and concurrency (10). This is prerequisite for Conics — make sure it's solid.
